Occupational Therapy

What We Work On at TLC Pediatric Therapy in Occupational Therapy (Birth–Five)

At TLC Pediatric Therapy, our pediatric occupational therapists help children develop the skills they need in their day to day lives, from holding a pencil and tying shoelaces to staying focused in school and managing big emotions. Through play-based, personalized therapy, we support each child’s unique journey toward greater independence, confidence, and joy in learning and growing.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy for children supports the development of essential life skills from playing and learning to self-care and social interaction.

What We Work On in Occupational Therapy (Birth–Five)

Adaptive Behavior (Self-Help / Daily Living)

  • Feeding and mealtime participation (self-feeding, utensils, open-cup drinking)
  • Dressing skills (fasteners, shoes/socks, layered clothing)
  • Hygiene and toileting readiness/routines
  • Sleep and bedtime routines; calm-down strategies

Physical Development

  • Fine Motor & Visual-Motor Integration: grasp patterns, bilateral coordination, hand strength, scissor skills, block building, shape copying, pre-writing strokes, name tracing
  • Gross Motor Foundations for OT participation: postural control, shoulder stability for table work, midline crossing, and core activation that supports seated attention

Sensory Processing & Regulation

  • Modulation for sound, touch, movement, taste, and smell
  • Strategies embedded into play and routines (deep pressure, movement breaks, tactile exploration)
  • Regulation plans for transitions, community outings, and group activities

Cognition & Play (OT Scope)

  • Joint attention, cause-and-effect, turn-taking, imitation
  • Functional and pretend play; problem-solving in play sequences
  • Early executive functions: shifting attention, impulse control, simple planning

Social-Emotional Participation

  • Co-regulation routines with caregivers; identifying emotions through play
  • Flexibility with changes; coping strategies for frustration
  • Peer play readiness: sharing materials, group play, simple social rules

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

TLC Pediatric Therapy is multidisciplinary and thrives in an interdisciplinary, collaborative team approach.
If other needs become apparent, we identify and address them early. Occupational Therapy works hand-in-hand with other disciplines to ensure your child receives holistic, coordinated care.
